SBC for SIP and Teams

SBCs are one of the most important interfaces in today's VoIP communication. Without them, no carrier can operate today.

What is a session border controller?

A session border controller, or SBC for short, is a specialized device that protects and controls the flow of IP communication. As the term suggests, session border controllers are used at the borders of networks to monitor IP communication sessions. Originally developed to secure and regulate VoIP networks, SBCs are now used in all forms of real-time communication, including VoIP, IP video, text chat and collaboration sessions.

Winet has developed its own session border controllers based on Kamalio. Kamailio® is an open source SIP server released under GPLv2+ that can process thousands of call settings per second. Kamailio can be used to build large platforms for VoIP and real-time communication - presence, WebRTC, instant messaging and other applications.

The powerful functions include: asynchronous TCP, UDP and SCTP, secure communication over TLS for VoIP (voice, video, text); WebSocket support for WebRTC; IPv4 and IPv6; SIMPLE instant messaging and presence with embedded XCAP server and MSRP relay; asynchronous operations; IMS extensions for VoLTE; EN UM; DID and least cost routing; load balancing; routing failover; billing, authentication and authorization; support for many backend systems such as MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, Radius, LDAP, Redis, Cassandra, MongoDB, Memcached; JSON and XMLRPC control interface, SNMP monitoring.

SBC for SIP

Winet's SIP SBC manages all calls and connections that run via Ayrix or other hosted PBX systems. It is also responsible for connections to other carriers.
We use the SBC as a session controller and load balancer for the voice switches. Its reliability is unsurpassed and, alongside the databases, forms the heart of our carrier backbone. More about SIP Trunk from Winet.

SBC for MS Teams

This SBC was also built on the basis of Kamalio. However, it speaks the proprietary Microsoft protocol Direct Routing. Direct Routing is also according to RFC, but at the other end and therefore not readily compatible with SIP. Winet customers benefit from a carrier grade SBC without expensive license costs. Once again, Winet has come up with something for its customers. More about MS Teams TRunk from Winet.

Ayrix PBX Hyprid Teams

The following graphic shows the communication of service provider, Ayrix PBX and MS Teams. The Ayrix PBX acts as a full-fledged PBX. Call flows can be controlled and SIP end devices can be registered directly. Communication with the PSTN takes place via a SIP trunk to a service provider. In addition, Ayrix PBX acts as an SBC (Session Border Controller) to enable communication with Microsoft Teams via "Teams Direct Routing". This allows calls from PSTN, SIP end device and MS Teams client to be established with each other. These call scenarios are shown in the further subchapters.

Provider selection

Why would you recommend Winet to others?

“I would recommend it, because Winet has accompanied us well from the start. We were a small company and have now grown and grow further. Winet still accompanies us well and if a provider understands that they should also accompany and look after small customers from the start, then the customers also remain loyal."
