The SaaS model is based on the idea that the software and IT infrastructure are provided by an external IT service provider and used by the customer as a service. In order to use online services, an internet-enabled computer and an internet connection to the external IT service provider are required. The software is usually accessed via a web browser.

The service recipient pays a usage fee for the use and operation. The SaaS model distributes the acquisition and operating costs according to the "pay as you use" principle. As a rule, the service provider takes over the entire IT administration and other services such as maintenance work and software updates independently. This outsources the IT infrastructure, including all administrative tasks, so that the service recipient can concentrate on its core business. Nevertheless, the ultimate responsibility for proper use and implementation lies with the service recipient.
